Brexit Environmental Enquiry guidelines

tumblr_nlw751urgn1sq04bjo1_5001Blimey, not another consultation! What’s this one about?

The Environmental Audit Committee is holding an inquiry into the Future of the Natural Environment after the EU Referendum. Basically it’s about how we should protect our natural environment in the wake of the decision to leave the European Union.

OK, that does sound quite important. Tell me more.

The background is that if and when Brexit goes ahead, many of the EU laws that protect our environment will not apply to the UK any more. This means that the British government will need to introduce new laws on environmental protection to replace the EU laws, which could be good or bad for the environment. You can find out more about the scope of the enquiry on the Parliament.uk website. And of course, what we want to do is to make sure that fracking is included in the enquiry and that the Committee receives lots of submissions calling for a moratorium or a ban on environmental grounds.

Sounds good. When’s the deadline?

The deadline was Friday, September 9th. However, we have been in touch with the Environmental Audit Committee office, and they have told us that they will accept submissions over the weekend, so you have until the midnight on Sunday 11th September to get this done.

Right. So, what do I have to do?

no social licencePlease send in a submission – on a Word document – via the Commons Select Committee website. You don’t have to be an expert in environmental issues to make a submission. Even a short paragraph saying that you expect environmental regulations post-Brexit to be as tough, or tougher, than those we currently have in place would be extremely helpful. And of course please call for an immediate moratorium or ban on fracking on environmental grounds.

Can you give me some tips on what to say?

It’s what I live for. There are lots of different areas that this enquiry could cover, from fracking to wildlife protection, the CAP, subsidies, bees, GM crops, rewilding and protected areas, so if there is something that  you feel strongly about, feel free to put it in. But please make sure you mention fracking, whatever else you say in your submission.

Then when you’re done, go to the Enquiry Submission Page, fill in the form and attach the document.

Right, that seems easy enough. When’s the deadline again?

By midnight on Sunday 11th September.

OK, I’ll do it now. Thanks for sorting this out. I bet you’re hoping this is the last enquiry for a while.

Well, there’s one on Community Compensation in the pipeline, but that deadline isn’t till October 15th … guidelines to follow. Probably…
